Oil and Gas in Pennsylvania

The Seneca Native Americans were the first to use oil found in Pennsylvania. They collected oil by trapping it behind dams and in timber lined pits near the oil seeps on the banks of Oil Creek, Pa. The Seneca also skimmed the oily surface of water with blankets, then collected and stored the oil for trading, ceremonial, and medicinal purposes.

Samuel M Kier is often credited as the first settler to use oil commecially. He operated salt wells near Tarentum, Pa, and came up with uses for the oil that had been ruining his salt wells, the first being medicinal. He later refined the crude oil into Kerosene, and adapted whale oil lamps to burn this 'rock oil'. East Coast investors took an interest in this new product, and contacted "Colonel" Edwin L. Drake for the purpose of evaluating oil. Drake determined the best way to harvest oil was to drill a well. With the cooperation of William "Uncle Billy" Smith the first well was constructed in Titusville Pa. Oil was found at 69.5 feet below the surface in August 1859, and the modern oil industry was born.
